The Golden Globes went off with minimal excitement Sunday, as the Writers Guild wouldn't allow a scripted ceremony and the Screen Actors Guild wouldn't let the stars attend. But despite the boring, abbreviated show, winners were still announced. And now we convey them to you.
Any surprises? Well, hard to say, as there were a lot of strong contenders. Atonement is clearly the old lady choice for best drama. It's something of a surprise that it took the trophy considering four of its six competitors have higher ratings on Rottentomatoes (only the Denzel Washington dramas American Gangster and The Great Debaters trail it by a small margin). Not that RT is necessarily the final word on taste, but it does make Atonement something of a dark horse.
Semi-fun fact: Ernest Borgnine was up for Best Actor in a Miniseries or Made for TV Movie, but lost to Jim Broadbent. At age 90, Borgnine nearly became the oldest man to win a Golden Globe, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say he's now the oldest man ever to lose a Golden Globe. If anyone wants to double-check that, be my guest. I already checked on Kirk Douglas and Karl Malden, and they haven't been nominated in a while.
