Barbagallo Backs Kiarostami - SendMeRSS

Written by David Morgan

Prominent Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami has secured funding from the Italian-based production company Bibi Film on his next movie The Certified Copy. The film stars French actress Juliette Binoche and production is slated to begin in Tuscany this March. According to Variety, "Binoche will play a French art gallery owner who falls for an older novelist, played by French thesp Sami Frey, as they travel around the Chianti countryside." They also mention:

Binoche spent time in Iran with Kiarostami this month to prepare for her role, irritating local pols who are not pleased that the Iranian helmer cast Binoche, calling it “cultural destruction.”

That seems a little dramatic and close-minded. They should be nicer to the man who put Iranian cinema on the map as far as the west is concerned. Kiarostami has made nearly thirty films in Iran and this will be his first feature shot outside of his native country with European actors. At age sixty-seven, he should be entitled to try something new!
