Warner Bros has released an official plot synopsis for The Dark Knight. The following synopsis was made available to us thanks to our friends at slashfilm:
The Dark Knight reunites director Christopher Nolan with star Christian Bale, who returns to continue Batman's war on crime. With the help of Lieutenant Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) and District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), Batman sets out to destroy organized crime in Gotham for good. The triumvirate proves to be effective, but they soon find themselves prey to a rising criminal mastermind known as the Joker (Heath Ledger), who thrusts Gotham into anarchy and forces the Dark Knight ever closer to crossing the fine line between hero and vigilante.
There you go! No surprises from the synopsis, this is all information we have known for sometime. One thing that stands out to me is the mention of Harvey Dent. It looks like Eckhart is going to have a fairly significant role in the film, and this is fine with me. I am a fan of Eckhart and am guessing that they will be using this film to prep him for the role of Two Face in the future. I have never been that enthused about the Two Face character, but I am interested in seeing what Eckhart can do with him.
