Jaden Smith will yet again follow in his father's footsteps as he encounters aliens in Fox's forthcoming sci-fi thriller The Day the Earth Stood Still. According to THR:
Smith will play the rebellious Jacob, the 8-year-old stepson of scientist Helen Benson (Jennifer Connelly) who first makes contact with the humanoid alien Klaatu (Keanu Reeves).
Kathy Bates and Jon Hamm also star in this remake of Robert Wise's 1951 classic, in which an alien and his enormous robotic bodyguard land their flying saucer in Washington DC and warn the human race to either adhere to peace on Earth or be destroyed by the aliens. The new director is Scott Derrickson, and the screenplay is by David Scarpa.
I'm concerned that they're making this new film too conventional. The "sassy mischievous stepkid" is a groan-worthy archetype that should have been exorcised by the end of the 90s.
