What's Next for Edgar Wright? Maybe Ant-Man or Scott Pilgrim! - SendMeRSS

Ant-Man

After Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, two awesome movies, I'm dying to know what filmmaker Edgar Wright is up to next and when the heck we'll get to see whatever it is he's making. The buzz for quite some time has been that Marvel's Ant-Man was the next big film on Edgar's slate, but it seems to be stuck in development hell. Our friends over at Empire in the UK have been bringing some solid updates this week on various comic book movies, and today it's the latest from Edgar on Ant-Man.

Empire caught up with Edgar after the writers strike had ended, but that doesn't yet mean that he has another film officially lined-up. And everyone knows that in Hollywood the status of a project could change from bad to even worse in a day's time.

"I finished the script [to Ant-Man] and I'm having a meeting about it next week," he said. "But it depends which comes first in the queue basically. I've been working on two at once, and I'm also about to start developing two more scripts, one of which is with Simon [Pegg]. It could be Scott Pilgrim (another comic book adaptation who must slay a girl's evil exes in order to date her) is next or it could be Ant-Man, we shall see."

Edgar Wright has been attached to Ant-Man for quite some time, meaning a few years now. Wright has said previously that the film is most likely going to be a comedy more than a straight action movie. It's been listed on Marvel's upcoming line-up, but it sounds like it still hasn't gone anywhere. At least the script is done and hopefully his meeting next week, which I'm assuming is with Marvel, goes well.

As for the actual character, Ant-Man is a superhero from that Marvel universe that originally appeared in 1962. Although multiple characters have actually become Ant-Man, the film will be based around the biochemist Dr. Hank Pym. Pym develops a method of altering his size and his first self-test goes wrong, giving him the ability to shrink. After discovering his ability, Pym developed a helmet that helps him communicate with and control insects. With that explanation of the character, it almost seems more reasonable to turn a film into a comedy than anything else.

The other two films that Edgar Wright mentioned as possible in his line-up next are an adaptation of Scott Pilgrim or another untitled film with Simon Pegg. Our guess is that the second film is actually Them, a sci-fi comedy script that Mike White wrote for Wright. Scott Pilgrim is a more juvenile comic book about a 23-year-old Canadian slacker and wannabe-rockstar. Pilgrim plays bass in the band "Sex Bob-Omb" and falls in love with an American delivery girl named Ramona V. Flowers, but must defeat her seven "evil exes" in order to date her. If Edgar can actually turn this into a movie I'll watch, I'll be very impressed, but it sounds like a kids movie just for Wright to make some money.

No matter what Edgar Wright ends up directing next, I know I'll be looking forward to it. He's proved himself twice with Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz and I truly can't wait to see what he does next. Though I prefer Ant-Man more than the others, anything he does with Simon Pegg is solid gold or even the Scott Pilgrim movie doesn't sound too bad.
