Meet the Parents star Teri Polo has been tapped to play the lead in indie thriller The Beacon. She joins a cast that already includes David Rees Snell (The Shield), Michael Urie (Ugly Betty) and Michael Ironside (Total Recall).
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the screenplay by Michael Stokes, "centers on Bryn (Polo), a thirtysomething woman grieving over the loss of her 4-year-old son. Along with her college professor and author husband (Snell), Bryn moves into the charming old Beacon Apartments. There, she begins to see a boy who died in a fall down the Beacon's elevator shaft while trying to escape his abusive father. With the help of an eccentric young professor (Urie), Bryn tries to save the boy's spirit. Ironside plays a tough career cop who has adopted the residents."
The film is being produced by Sally Helppie and will mark the directorial debut of longtime writer Stokes. Stokes doesn't exactly have the best track record, and this film sounds pretty derivative, most notably of the recent Spanish horror film The Orphanage, but I suppose it's unfair to judge this far in advance. Production began earlier this week in Dallas.
