The critical darling Once, which was snubbed in every Oscar category except one, may now lose that one shot at glory. The New York Times reports that there are some questions over the eligibility of Once's Best Song nominee "Falling Slowly." The Academy's rules specify that "An original song consists of words and music, both of which are original and written specifically for the film."
Evidently, Glen Hansard's song appeared on two albums before the film was released, suggesting the possibility that the song may or may not have been written specifically for the movie. The Academy is still reviewing the situation, but if things go badly for Once, Enchanted will have a 75% chance of walking away with the statue as its three songs' only competitor will be "Raise it Up" from August Rush. Eesh. And they couldn't spare one nomination spot for Eddie Vedder's work on Into the Wild?
