I've been to two San Diego Comic-Con's, two WonderCon's, and countless more conventions, but I've never seen a crowd this excited ever. The X-Files fans packed Hall A at the Moscone Center in San Francisco yesterday to see not only the first glimpse of footage from X-Files 2, but to hear David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, director Chris Carter, and writer Frank Spotnitz talk about the movie. First things first, the footage, which is what excited fans the most, has hit the internet and can be watched via YouTube below. Whether you're a big X-Files fan or just hoping for an awesome thriller this summer, you won't want to miss this very short teaser trailer.
This footage debuted without even a title, just the release date - July 25, 2008. It's hard to describe the scenes, but it started out with a line of FBI searching across a frozen lake and Billy Connolly leading the way shouting out "it's here!" The rest of the short teaser trailer featured a lot of quick flashes of Mulder and Scully and some more fast-paced scenes, which I'm sure you'll discover once a first real trailer is released.
Chris Carter and the cast then went on to answer endless questions from the audience, starting out with how hard it was to get back into a franchise that they left six years ago. "It's actually harder in all honesty to come back into a role that you've done for a long time because you do want to use your intuition." Duchovny explains, "But you have this entire body of work behind it." When asked about what the most difficult scenes were, he added that those with Gillian were the hardest "only because we want those to work so well." He would put so much weight on those scenes with her because they both really wanted them to work, and Gillian agreed.
Writer Frank Spotnitz explains that returning to the series and working on the movie "has been like a dream" and that everyone is very enthusiastic and excited to be back. The series' composer Mark Snow will be back doing the score for the movie and actors Amanda Peet and Xzibit have joined the cast in important FBI agent roles as well.
As for story details, everyone involved is very tight lipped, not letting anything slip. When asked about whether it might involve the apocalypse in 2012 in some way, Carter said that "we want to be true to the series and the mythology, but we wanted to make sure we made the best movies" while also doing what feels right. However, "that 2012 date is certainly looming in our minds." That might be a cryptic message in some way, but I'm certain we won't find out until July 25th.
While I'm not exactly a big X-Files fan, just leave it up to Duchovny to tell you why this show and this movie is much better than the "others" out there like "CSI".
"I think to give all the respect to Chris [Carter] and Frank [Spotnitz] that they deserve, I think the story telling in X-Files was a lot more sophisticated than those shows. I think you go to the movies for the philosophical battle and the drama of solving a case with intellect."
And to give all the fans one final hair-rising moment, a question was asked whether the recurring character Alex Krycek would be back even though he died in the series (supposedly). Chris Carter's response: "I'll just say to you that, no one is ever really dead in the X-Files." They're going to keep the entire story a secret and won't even real the rest of the cast until the movie hits theaters - so despite what you may think you know, you probably don't. "Don't trust or believe anything, just wait for the film."
When it comes down to it, despite there are still an incredible amount of fans even six years after the show ended, not all of us love Mulder and Scully. Thankfully, Carter asserts that, "you don't need to watch the X-Files to understand and enjoy this movie." My concern is that after watching that trailer above I wasn't attracted to it like the first movie from 1998. The trailer felt more like a preview for the episode "next week" than a movie, but I think for WonderCon, that was the idea. They wanted to sell it like it was "coming back" to this room full of die-hard fanatics. And I hope that after it finishes filming and they polish it off it'll turn into a real movie and not just an extended episode.
X-Files 2 is directed by X-Files creator Chris Carter and co-written by both Carter and show regular Frank Spotnitz. The film arrives in theaters this summer on July 25.
