There's a buzz (or at least a moderate whir) surrounding actor Djimon Hounsou at the moment. It seems the African-born actor who co-starred in Gladiator and Blood Diamond mentioned at a press junket the other day that he had signed on to star in a comic book trilogy that he called his "dream project." He wouldn't mention it by name, which leaves it to all of us on the internet to throw around guesses for a few weeks until the truth outs itself.
IESB reported the story first (as far as we can tell) and they laid out the three major possibilities:
1. The Black Panther - Apparently Fantastic Four director Tim Story told IGN at some point that he wanted to cast Hounsou in the role of the African chieftain-turned crime fighter. Also, Marvel has had such a project on their slate for some time now.
2. Luke Cage - Director John Singleton had been talking about a film devoted to Luke Cage aka Powerman, though this seems somewhat less likely as Hounsou speaks with a noticeable accent and Cage is an American hero. But of course, the wonders of dialect-coaching could fix that.
3.Tintin - IESB calls this a longshot, but Cinematical makes a strong case for it. For one thing, it's already been established that Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg want to make a trilogy about the Belgian journalist, while no such tri-movie plans are known to exist for Black Panther or Luke Cage. Secondly, Hounsou worked with Spielberg in the actor's breakthrough role in Amistad. Thirdly, Hounsou spent his formative years in France, where Tintin is an incredibly popular and iconic character, probably much moreso than the two semi-obscure Marvel heroes previously mentioned.
If you can't tell, I'm siding with Cinematical on this one, though without a doubt, Hounsou would make a fantastic Black Panther. He's athletic enough to pull off the physical aspect of the movie and he's got the acting chops to carry the dramatic bits as well. We'll keep you posted as this deal comes more to light.
