Matthew McConaughey Possibly Captain America

Say it ain't so! Hot on the heels of Marvel's announcement yesterday of a Captain America movie for 2011, a scoop from Cinema Blend names Matthew McConaughey is one of the actors in the running for the lead role.

It would easily be the biggest travesty in all of Marvel history if McConaughey was cast as Captain America. The scoop says that although the film is still three years out from release, they're currently searching for their star and he is one of the few that is being considered. I really hate talking about rumors like this, but everyone is hungry for something to chew on after Marvel's announcement and here it is.

While Cinema Blend claims their source is reliable, this whole idea is not only a bit far fetched, but a final decision won't be made for quite some time. In case you're not familiar with Captain America, he is (typically) the altar ego of Steve Rogers, a sickly young man who was enhanced to the peak of human perfection by an experimental serum in order to aid the United States war effort. He can be identified by his American flag-like uniform and indestructible shield that can be thrown as a weapon. In the most recent comics, he has become the leader of The Avengers, which seems like the direction Marvel is going in with the movies: The First Avenger: Captain America and The Avengers both in 2011.

The real question regarding the upcoming The First Avenger: Captain America is how they're going to turn him into a character that can actually be appreciated in today's day and age. Captain America was originally created in the 1940's as patriotic government propaganda in order to help encourage even more animosity towards the Nazis. Matthew McConaughey is not only a piss poor actor to begin with, but he really doesn't seem to find the iconic Captain America that I envision. Not only does the right person need to be a very commanding actor, but the character needs to really be adapted into modern times and given the right story to succeed in a world where patriotism isn't the biggest focus anymore.

I'm pretty sure I know that everyone is on the same level of me in my distaste for McConaughey as Captain America. Instead, I'm curious to hear what people really think about the character and who might be a better choice consideration the aspects of him. Leave your thoughts below!

Three Minutes of Speed Racer

Warner Bros has released three minutes of Wachowski Brothers’ Speed Racer online.

Terminator 4 to be PG-13

Last summer one of the big stories was the trend of PG-13 over R-Rated action movies. Live Free or Die Hard opted for teenage friendly over intense action and graphic language, and the film went on to gross over $380 million worldwide, the highest for the series. And in 2008, things have not changed. Cloverfield opened huge proving a PG-13 monster movie could make big bucks. Even Eli Roth is now talking about making a PG-13 mass-destruction film. But now word comes in from Anne Thompson that the Halcyon Company are aiming for a PG-13 rating for Terminator 4.

The Terminator series is one of the highest-grossing R-Rated franchises of all time, with over $1.03 billion in worldwide box office receipts. I've been one of the few supporters of the film since it was first announced, while most have been scared off by the announcement of McG as director. And I feel like I should be angry about this announcement, but for some reason I'm not. And I think the reason why is that I feel that Terminator won't suffer from a PG-13 rating. None of the things that made T2: Judgement Day a great film would have been effected by a ratings bump from R to PG-13. Let's face it, this isn't Rambo - large quantities of gore aren't required. And Terminators aren't programed to be foul mouthed.

Besides, Halcyon co-founder and co-CEO Victor Kubicek claims that the ratings have changed over the years and that "PG-13 has increased in intensity.” and it allows them to sell more toys, of course. The fourth film will offer the largest merchandising program to date for The Terminator series.

Terminator 4 begins production today, and is scheduled to hit theaters on on May 22nd 2009.

New Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull Trailer - What Do You Think?

Many of you probably saw the new trailer for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in front of Iron Man, judging from Tony Stark’s boffo weekend numbers, and now it’s online. The coolest reveal here is that the plot’s plush Amazonian temple is said to be guarded by the undead, so on top of the rumored alien subplot, it appears Indy IV will be fencing off with that ambiguous X Files sequel for air conditioned supernatural kicks.

We also gleam Shia LaBeouf’s Mutt Williams pulling a young biker Brando, Ford finally looking comfortable and in grizzled top form, an atomic-age countdown, and lots of nicely edited explosions and action. And as Peter and I have discussed, nobody has any idea how this blockbuster’s story will play and pan out, which is aces. With the exception of too much Boratian camp in Cate Blanchett’s accent, yes, I’d say this trailer kicks ass. Eighteen days and counting, that’s a welcome relief, as George Lucas’s constant meh’ing was sucking up my anticipation like a soggy strawberry at the bottom of a colossal daiquiri.

Final Indiana Jones & The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull Trailer

At the Iron Man screening(s) I attended the new (and presumably, final) trailer for Indiana Jones & The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull was shown, and I have to admit that I'm finally getting excited about this film. I just really hope that Spielberg and Lucas manage to re-capture the spirit of the original. The trailer at least, seems to do so.

I think it looks great and I can't express how happy I am at seeing Karen Allen back on the big screen playing the wonderful character of Marion Ravenwood from the original Raiders of the Lost Ark. One of my biggest disappointments with the series was when they came back with the sequel without her as the leading lady, and instead replacing her with the whiney character played by Kate Capshaw.

That was pretty much unforgivable as far as I'm concerned and to this day Temple of Doom remains my least favorite of the original trilogy.

But Indy 4? This one I'm finally looking forward to.
